Co-founders of PillPack TJ Parker and Elliot Cohen applied to start-up accelerator Techstars Boston with the PillPack concept in 2013. By July 2013, PillPack had already raised just over $4 million in funding, with a group of investors led by venture capital firms Atlas Ventures and Founder Collective.
Amazon acquired PillPack in 2018 for a reported $1b, reportedly beating retail rival Walmart, which was also vying for the company. Prior to the sale to Amazon, PillPack had raised a total of over $117 million in outside funding from investors such as Accel Partners to QueensBridge Venture Partners.
A year after it was acquired, PillPack changed its branding to 'PillPack by Amazon Pharmacy', the first reference to Amazon Pharmacy. In November CEO TJ Parker was promoted to Vice President within Amazon.
