Brella (formerly Clara Insurance) overview

Brella (formerly Clara Insurance), founded in 2019, is an insurance technology company that provides financial support to people with health recovery. The startup covers more than 12,000 conditions and pays cash on diagnosis.

It is a single, comprehensive benefit that sends users fast cash when they’re injured or sick. The money can be used to help cover what health insurance didn’t or anything else they need on their road to recovery. It offers wide-ranging, personalised coverage, with the option for additional coverage for chronic conditions and mental health, with no pre-existing condition exclusions.

Brella raised $5.5m in Seed funding in May 2020; the investment round was led by Two Sigma Ventures, with participation from Founder Collective, RGAX, SymphonyAI and more.

The startup launched in Texas in August 2020 after securing a further $1.5m from new investors. It also changed its company name from Clara Insurance to Brella.

In April 2021 Brella raised $15m in Series A funding. The startup stated that it would use the funds to continue product development and fuel nationwide expansion.
