American Well was founded by Dr. Ido Schoenberg and Roy Schoenberg in 2006. In 2018, American Well acquired Avizia, a company that provides virtual access to doctors inside of hospitals and health systems across the United States. The acquisition will help American Well move from treating routine maladies to more tertiary services, offering a menu of services from partner physicians and hospitals around the world.
In 2019 the company partnered with Netsmart Technologies , a developer of behavioural health, human services and post-acute care technologies. American Well and Netsmart are partnering on an integrated approach to address the growing US opioid crisis. Through the new partnership, specialists can now conduct remote addiction therapy visits with individuals in real time.
In August 2020 the telehealth company filed the preliminary paperwork for an IPO, and also agreed to a multi-year partnership with Google. The partnership will see the two collaborate on technology, and Amwell will move its video traffic to Google Cloud by January 2021. As part of the partnership, Google is to buy $100m of its stock.
