Find out moreAetna is a diversified health care benefits company providing individuals, employers, health care professionals, producers, and others with innovative benefits, products, and services. Today, Aetna serves an estimated 46.7 million people with healthcare information and resources.
Founded in 1853 and based in Hartford, C.T., Aetna offers a broad range of traditional and consumer-directed health insurance products and related services, including medical, pharmacy, dental, behavioural health, group life, long-term care and disability plans, and medical management capabilities. Considered a market leader in the healthcare/insurance space, Aetna is constantly exploring how innovation can improve their current processes and, in turn, help give customers a better service. Its most recent foray came in 2019, when they introduced DNA testing to wellness plans for its European members. Focusing on health and lifestyle, it will record data on nutrigenomics, fitness, sleep, and also stress. Benefits will also include health coaching, an employee assistance programme, and its virtual care service, vHealth.
In 2019, Aetna, along with Anthem and the Chicago-based Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), announced they would be joining forces with IBM and PNC Bank to develop a blockchain network allowing healthcare companies to build, share and deploy digital solutions for business issues. These include promoting efficient claims and payment processing, enabling secure and frictionless healthcare information exchanges and maintaining current and accurate provider directories. Later that year, they launched "Attain", a personalised health and wellbeing app designed in collaboration with Apple that combines a patient's health history with the Apple Watch to promote a healthier lifestyle.
Later that year too, Aetna International launched DNA testing for its European members as part of its wellness plans. Focusing exclusively at health and lifestyle, the tests will take into account nutrigenomics, fitness, sleep, and also stress. Its aim is to support Aetna members who want to take control of their health with personalised information.
In August 2021 Aetna announced the launch of a new physician-led primary care service in partnership with Teladoc. Leveraging the scale of both parent company CVS's and Teladocs capabilities, it will enable members to access a significant range of medical services and support wherever they are.
